Music brought them to each other and it is also what keeps them together. That’s why it is not surprising that they also thrive on making beautiful music together.

Since French singer-songwriter Miguel Juteau met his wife, Evelyn, herself a jazz singer, the two became binded by their music.

Miguel is of French-Spanish descent. He started his musical career in Northern France — "First into pop then Flamenco, Latin and acoustic," he grants. After recording a couple of his own compositions in his early 20s, he moved to Granada, Spain to study Flamenco guitar. He later fell in love with Brazilian music, a passion he has nurtured ever since.

Evelyn, for her part, is a seasoned entertainer from Cebu. She worked with many leading jazz bands and eventually performed with Miguel in Barcelona and Paris. In 1998, the couple exchanged marriage vows in a church wedding in France.

AQUARELA prides itself in being "authentic" when it comes to samba and bossa nova music. The band’s original members included Roberto Buena, George Almaden and Dix Lucero. Filipino musicians have joined the band over time, including Michael Alba on drums and Colby de la Calzada on bass. Miguel composes and arranges songs for the band, while Evelyn acts as band manager and record producer, as she is also a frontliner.

"Sometimes it’s difficult for us to understand what God has in store for us. But when we see a couple brought together like Miguel and Evelyn of AQUARELA, we see the evidence. Not only they are meant to be and have both completed each other, their strong bonds have also given us something special to complete our lives in perfection through their music.

Miguel and Evelyn with their AQUARELA band describes Brazilian music in its authentic form. They successfully captured the essence of this genre with their style ~ sexy, exotic, beautiful, breathtaking and irresistable. All those essences appear in the simplest way, but with multi-layered colors; that’s why they named themselves as AQUARELA, which means “Watercolor” in English. They have released two albums, "Bossa Nova Affair" and "Changes" (see the review) and there will surely be more to come!

As we are fast approaching Valentine’s Day, I made a “Heart to Heart” Interview with Miguel and Evelyn through the help of mJ Juco of TangerineSkies Artist PR. Let’s get deep with them, find out how they met, how special the song “Girl from Ipanema” is for them plus their thoughts, wishes and much, much more!"

‘Jam for Japan’ a roaring success
By Pinky Aseron

All it took was a Facebook page announcing a benefit concert for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In less than a week, some 30 local and international acts representing different musical genres had signed up for “Jam for Japan,” the fundraiser held Friday night at the Ayala Museum.

A roaring success, the six-hour gig raised P17.5 million in corporate and individual donations, on top of ticket sales.

Ayala Corp. led the major donors. Its chair and CEO, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, mingled with the crowd.

More money is expected to flow in. Employees of Ayala Corp. and its affiliates are sending their contributions through salary deductions. “We have not counted that yet,” said Bill Luz, executive director of Ayala Museum, which allowed free use of its lobby for the concert.

A simultaneous “Jam for Japan” was held at The Red Lion Pub & Inn in Baguio City. Organizers said it was also successful.

Still another “Jam” will be mounted next week in San Francisco, California, by Filipino musician Carlos Zialcita, executive director of the San Francisco Pinoy Jazz Fest.

The audience at the Ayala Museum was treated to an invigorating mix of musical styles: acid soul (Capo), soul/R&B (Caz, Vincent Bueno), Pinoy progressive rock (Baked Love, Fuseboxx), reggae and funk (Julien Drolon), pop (Dulce, France Jancie, Top Suzara, Phyllum, The Late Isabel), pop vocals with guitar (Marie Digby, Albert de Pano), pop-jazz (Castro, Johnny Alegre and Absolute Zero, Nicole and Carlo, Aisaku Yokogawa), jazz piano with vocals (Kit de Castro and Norman Landsberg), blues guitar (Mel Orosa and 10-year-old Luis Galang), blues rock (Nino Mendoza and the Blue Jean Junkies), and electronic rock (Turbo Goth).

Prominent figures in the local jazz, samba and bossa nova circle turned up to support the cause: Sandra Lim-Viray & Jazz For Kicks, The CompanY, Jacqui Magno, Pat Castillo, Miguel and Evelyn Juteau of Aquarela, Sitti, Eileen Sison and Guarana, and Escola de Samba de Manila which lent the show a festive air.

“Jam for Japan” started when Viray, head of the Philippine International Jazz Foundation (Pijazz) spoke by phone to Evelyn Juteau who was with husband Miguel in Tokyo during the earthquake. Juteau persuaded Viray to consider organizing a benefit gig for victims of the earthquake-tsunami double whammy.

The ball got rolling when Viray called Luz, who readily agreed to hold the concert at the Ayala Museum, where the sixth Pijazzfest had its gala night recently.

Viray also called Agnes Suarez, whose outfit SATB likewise didn’t hesitate to provide free use of audio and musical equipment.

Food for all

M Café beside the Ayala Museum sponsored food for the artists and production staff and donated its net sales for that evening to the cause.

Dong Alegre, executive producer of “Miss Saigon” in Manila, directed the show.

Among the program highlights was the performance of Japanese-Irish singer-songwriter Marie Digby who, seeing pictures of the earthquake’s aftermath on the video screen, turned emotional while thanking the crowd for their help.

The sister-and-brother duo Nicole and Carlo obviously took after their father, world-class talent Mon David, as they did a cool mash-up of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Rainbow Connection.”

The CompanY, with guitarist Albert De Pano, sang feel-good tunes like James Taylor’s “Your Smiling Face” and the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.”

Uplifting songs

“We wanted to sing something to lift people’s spirits amid this tragedy,” said the group’s Moy Ortiz and Annie Quintos-Uy. “It was more the giving of one’s self to the cause that mattered, and not so much what one stood to gain from it.”

The night’s show-stopper was 10-year-old rock and blues guitar prodigy Luis Galang.

Luz was apparently overwhelmed at the outpouring of support, saying he felt it was serendipitous: “It took only a few phone calls, then help kept pouring in. The idea just snowballed!”

He added: “Most amazing, I think, were the friendships formed along the way. A lot of us didn’t know one another until tonight. And that’s all because we had one thing in in mind—that was to help.”

Thank you Ms Ellen Baltazar of Umagang Kay Ganda and ABS CBN for allowing us to promote our album twice in your show, Dec. 16, 2008 and Jan 7, 2009. We really appreciate the opportunity and graciousness you have shown us. Mabuhay!
However, Bossanova holds its distinction for its smooth flowing harmony and vocals done off the original chords that give an unmistakable sensual strain. “Bossanova is a beautiful mixture of jazz and Latin and Brazilian music”, says Evelyn Juteau, the lead vocals of Aquarela band—a husband and wife team-up that performs strictly jazz, Latin and Brazilian music . Her husband and the band’s acoustic guitarist , Miguel Juteau agrees. “ Bossanova blends American Jazz with Brazilian traditional genres like Samba and Choro.”, he continues. The couple believes that this music genre is nicely inching its way to the Pinoy culture with our affinity to sentimental music, and Bossanova can evoke “a bitter-sweet feeling of longing that is expressed musically’, describes Aquarela band.Nonetheless, it stirs the soul to celebrate joyfully. Here’s to the feel-good music. (Edited Version is published in 08November issue of Mabuhay Magazine)

Aquarela, Union of Love- by Leah Salterio

AQUARELA...
Union of Love for Music

By Leah C. Salterio

[Published last January 1, 2009 @ The Manila Bulletin]

Singing is second nature to them.

Rather than play golf or go ballroom dancing, they would prefer to sing. Music was also what brought them together, so it is not surprising that they thrive on making beautiful music.
Since French singer-songwriter Miguel Juteau met his wife, Evelyn, herself a jazz singer, the two became binded by their music. In 1999, a year after they tied the knot in France, the couple formed Aquarela, which means "watercolor" in Portuguese. The group readily defined itself as the most genuine representative of Latin and Brazilian music in the local entertainment scene.
Miguel started his musical career in Northern France – first into pop then Flamenco, Latin and acoustic.
Aquarela prides itself in churning out authentic samba and bossa nova music. Miguel composes and arranges songs for the band, while Evelyn acts as band manager and record producer, as well as frontliner.
They have their respective jobs that keep them busy, but when an opportunity comes for them to make beautiful music together, they continue their common passion.
Two years ago, Aquarela came out with their debut album, "Bossa Nova Affair," a collection of bossa nova and samba tunes distributed by Universal Records. The CD is an expression of Miguel and Evelyn’s love for Brazilian music, which conveys a soulful and romantic mood to listeners.
Miguel and Evelyn were successful enough in making more Filipinos appreciate samba and bossa nova music in their first album. "Bossa nova is a feeling and a mood, a mix of being romantic, nostalgic and happy," Miguel maintains. "The album was part of our mission to educate listeners with samba and bossa nova music. We are pleased that Filipinos are open-minded when it comes to any kind of music."
Admittedly, the couple was inspired by their first musical outing that’s why they worked on another album, which took more than six months to make. Recently, Miguel and Evelyn came out with "Changes," Aquarela’s second album.
"Our passion and love for singing prompted us to work on another album,"Evelyn asserts. "That is what we’ve always done since we’ve met."
Making music as a reflection of their life and romance, Miguel believes there cannot be a more apt title for their second album. "We’ve made a few, better changes in our life, that’s why we wanted that title," he grants. "It took us quite a while to complete the album because it was so difficult to gather the musicians together. We had several individual schedules to consider, including ours."
However, Aquarela’s music took an audacious turn in this second release. While Brazilian influences are still clearly recognizable on all tracks, this time, the song line up comprises mostly original compositions from Miguel and Evelyn.
"Changes is a bit jazzy," informs Miguel. "Our first album contains mostly bossa nova tracks and covers. The second one is composed of nine originals and three covers."
The couple displays anew their impressive musical artistry in "Changes," which contains three covers – the bossa nova upbeat ditty "Berimbau," The Doors’ ‘60s classic "Light My Fire," re-arranged as contemporary smooth jazz, and a refreshing acoustic take on the Visayan song "Usahay," recorded in the vernacular by Evelyn, who takes pride in her roots.
One of the original tracks is the soft fusion "Boracay," which the couple plans to launch in the island early next year. The Tagalog lyrics ("Ala-Ala Mo") were written by Mon David, himself a noted performer, while the English lyrics ("It Will Always Be You") were penned by Evelyn.
"We went to Boracay five years ago and we simply fell in love with the island,"Evelyn shares.
"Samedis Nirvana" in French, features a thumping groove and catchy sax lines. "Sin Amor" is a Spanish bolero, with Evelyn singing passionately of an undying love. "Unicornio" is a bossa / samba recorded in Spanish by Miguel.
"Cancion de la Fregona" is a Spanish piece laden with hypnotic percussion, flamenco guitar and Andalusian drama. "Melisa" is an acoustic piece featuring Miguel’s meditations on one’s fundamental need for love, as he sings to a simple guitar and sax accompaniment. "Saint Malo" is a French love song about a town in France of the same name.
"Melena Loca" is a Spanish samba that was the highlight of the first album. "Cita en Soledad" is a Spanish song which means "a date with solitude," expressing sadness with beautiful Latin-flavored arrangements. "Corazon Enganchado" is a bossa nova piece with chill-out grooves.
The album according to Miguel, uses real instruments – sax, bass, flute, acoustic guitar. Aside from singing, he also exhibits his masterful Brazilian-style guitar playing in the album. Dix Lucero does delightful sax and flute.
Miguel and Evelyn plan to sell the CD online, so they can reach out to more people who will appreciate their kind of music.
